The way out of pain or distress of any kind is through it. There’s no getting around it and the consequence are high when we deny or avoiding it. In fact, the longer we deny or avoid something the deeper it hooks into us. We lose our vitality and motivation and purpose for living. Fear that life itself is meaningless can begin to creep in to our psyche.
On the journey of being human the one thing that is certain and that we all have in common is that we will experience pain and loss. Throughout this human experience we’ve been told to ‘get on with it’, to stop feeling sorry for ourselves, thereby we are forced to avoid and deny what we are feeling at all cost. This has caused us all too often to go into hiding and shame and embarrassment about what is really going on inside us. This can be soul crushing and disempowering not to mention isolating.
So, what can you do?
- First, stop lying to yourself about how you really feel. You have a right to feel what you feel.
- Two, have the courage to admit you might need help. It’s nothing to be ashamed about and transformation does not happen in a vacuum. Nor is your transformation for self alone.
- Three, understand that anxiety, stress, sadness, anger are all conditions of being human and are not diseases for which one needs medication.
